Safe Superintelligence
The Creator of ChatGPT Returns
Hello readers,
Welcome to another edition of This Week in the Future! Ilya Sutskever, the former OpenAI scientist who fired Sam Altman, has returned with a new company and an unusual business model — one product: safe superintelligence.
Safe Superintelligence
The man behind ChatGPT, the man who fired OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and the man who is effectively responsible for the generative AI craze, that guy has a new company with a straightforward mission — building safe superintelligence.
Superintelligence is within reach. That is what the company claims on its website. There are no immediate product plans. SSI is intended as a research effort unconstrained by profit incentives. That doesn’t mean the company isn’t taking on investors though. Details are vague, but the company wants to bake safety into AI with engineering breakthroughs, not as a post-hoc software patch like current AI.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Sutskever says that the company’s only product will be the safe superintelligence whenever it’s built. A “straight-shot” approach. “Our singular focus means no distraction by management overhead or product cycles” — this seems to be a direct dig at OpenAI. 😅
Our Take
Are these delusions of grandeur or does Sutskever know something no one else does? The AI industry thrives on people’s uncertainty. It would be disappointing to watch this ambitious company just try to catch up to GPT-4 with yet another LLM. If Sutskever still believes that next token prediction is enough for AGI, then we may not actually see much in the way of true breakthroughs from this company. Time will tell.

📖 What We’re Reading
“AI has achieved everything from streamlining simple human tasks to making massive impacts in the enterprise. But it also has a blind spot—it can pick up our human biases. So, as AI becomes increasingly intertwined with our daily lives, it begs the question: How honest are our AI companions? Are they telling us what’s accurate, or simply what we want to hear?”
