OpenAI DevDay Highlights

PLUS: Elon Musk's New Chatbot

Hello readers,

Welcome to another edition of This Week in the Future! OpenAI held their first ever developer conference, announcing GPT-4 Turbo and a ton of API improvements that will make developing and utilizing AI faster, easier, and cheaper for businesses!

As always, thanks for being a subscriber! We hope you enjoy this week’s content — for a video breakdown, check out the episode on YouTube.

Let’s get into it!

OpenAI DevDay Highlights

OpenAI’s first DevDay brought forth several exciting updates and announcements, showcasing the company's commitment to innovation and developer support. Here's a summary of the key developments:

GPT-4 Turbo

Enhancements: GPT-4 Turbo is an improved version of GPT-4, likely featuring reduced parameter count for faster performance while maintaining similar levels of effectiveness. The knowledge cutoff is now April 2023 (GPT-4 was stuck in September 2021).

Cost Efficiency: It operates at three times lower cost for input tokens and two times lower cost for output tokens than GPT-4.

Extended Token Context: The model boasts a 128k token context, surpassing Anthropic’s 100k token context, though larger context windows don’t necessarily improve model performance.

Assistants API

Focused on building agent-like experiences, this API facilitates the creation of AI assistants with specialized knowledge and functions. It introduces persistent and indefinitely long threads, easing state management and context window limitations.

GPT-4 Turbo with Vision

Developers can now pass images to the model, opening up vast possibilities for applications. DALL·E 3 integration and text-to-speech are also available through the API.

GPT-4 Fine-Tuning

Enterprises can have a custom model built for them by a dedicated team of OpenAI researchers. This is an experimental program but makes sense for OpenAI to offer since no one understands their models better than they do.

Copyright Shield

OpenAI will now step in and defend customers who face legal claims around copyright infringement (a risk when using AI models), and OpenAI will pay any costs incurred.

Whisper Large v3

OpenAI also unveiled the latest version of their open-source automated speech recognition model available through the API.

Custom GPTs

With GPTs, users will be able to create and monetize their own specialized chatbots using an intuitive GPT Builder. The Builder lets you use natural language to describe the type of GPT you want to build. Users can then add their GPT to the GPT Store and earn money depending on usage.

Also Grok

In what was perhaps calculated timing, Elon Musk unveiled a new chatbot named Grok, developed by the team at xAI, just before OpenAI’s developer conference. Grok has real-time access to X (formerly Twitter), which certainly gives it the most current knowledge of any chatbot.

Why This Matters

OpenAI’s latest updates signal a robust response to developer needs, aiming to push the boundaries of what's possible with AI. From efficiency improvements in GPT-4 Turbo to expansive modalities in the API, these advancements hint at a future where AI becomes more accessible, customizable, and integrated across various applications.

Our Take

It’s simple. A better developer experience means more applications will be developed that enterprises can then utilize. OpenAI’s announcements mean it’s faster, easier, and cheaper than ever for businesses to take advantage of powerful AI models. We hope this trend continues throughout the industry!
