Meta’s New Groove

Meta has released the first two models of its much anticipated Llama 3. The models are 8B and 70B parameters, with a 400B parameter model still in training. You can try Llama 3 on the meta.ai website. Llama 3 will be integrated across all of Meta’s apps with the Meta AI assistant added to search bars. Llama 3 will soon be available on AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Hugging Face, IBM watsonx, and more.

With Llama 3 being open source, Meta has included safety tools for developers including Llama Guard 2, Code Shield, and CyberSec Eval 2. In terms of performance, Meta claims Llama 3 is the best in its class (or classes). Here are the numbers:

Why This Matters

Meta has found its groove in the AI race and is likely to join the ranks of OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, with Apple lurking in the shadows. Meta wants even artificial general intelligence (AGI) to be open source, and Llama 3 is a step in that direction. More open models means more customization and flexibility for businesses.

Grok Can See Clearly Now

Grok’s stated purpose is to understand the universe. What good is a cosmic explorer if it can’t see? Elon Musk’s xAI has unveiled Grok-1.5 Vision, imbuing Grok with multimodal capabilties that are competitive with GPT-4, Claude 3, and Gemini.

What’s notable is xAI’s rapid iteration. Grok-1.5 was released in March 2024 and Grok-1 in November 2023. However, Grok wasn’t the only multimodal model revealed this week:

xAI might end up being a serious contender in the AI race after all. Grok has access to real-time data from X as well as all of Tesla’s video data. With the sudden release of a multimodal version, Grok could become the underdog tale of the decade.
