PLUS: Detecting Deceptive AI
Hello readers,
Welcome to another edition of This Week in the Future! Profluent unveiled OpenCRISPR, a human genome editor that could revolutionize medicine. Plus, Anthropic shares research on how to survive an AI sleeper cell.
Let’s get into it!
In Biotech, AI Builds You
Biotech startup Profluent has unveiled OpenCRISPR, the world’s first open source, AI-generated gene editor, marking the first successful precision editing of the human genome with customizable gene editors designed by AI.
No, this does not mean AI will mutate our collective biomass into electrodes it can harvest for energy, but it does mean the promising field of gene editing will be supercharged, potentially revolutionizing medicine.
The Rise of Medical AI
Drug discovery remains one of the most promising uses of AI. So much so that Moderna partnered with OpenAI to advance mRNA medicine, Hugging Face launched the Open Medical-LLM Leaderboard, and Xaira emerged from stealth with $1 billion in funding.
Our Take
The more AI understands about human biology, the more it can manipulate it (for good, of course). It wouldn’t be surprising if another Theranos appeared amidst this AI health stampede though. Despite the potential risks, drug discovery is still a worthwhile pursuit.
