AI is taking over the grid
And our AI story of the week!
Hello readers,
Welcome to the AI For All newsletter! Today, we’ll be looking at how AI is reshaping the power grid, how to create AI workflows, and AI news from around the web!
AI in Action: Electrifyingly Efficient
Welcome to the AI in Action, we feature a practical application for AI tech!
Much has been said about the ways that AI is straining the grid with its power demands, but it’s also helping to power infrastructure more efficient. Google is teaming up with PJM Interconnection—the largest power grid operator in North America—to use AI to accelerate the notoriously slow process of connecting new power sources to the grid.
As energy demand surges due to data center growth and the AI boom, the U.S. grid has struggled to keep pace, with backlogs for interconnection approvals delaying the addition of new renewable and natural gas energy projects. This collaboration aims to reduce those bottlenecks by applying AI to tasks like reviewing interconnection requests, assessing project viability, and simulating grid behavior—tasks that are currently handled manually by planners.
Part of the process will involve creating a sort of “Google Maps” for the grid itself:
"[We’re] bringing in different layers that planners might need to see in a single toggle on and off view to guide faster decisions, introduce new insights, hopefully find efficiencies in those ways.
The Alphabet-backed startup Tapestry will lead the technical work, layering grid data in an interactive, visual interface that should help planners make faster, better-informed decisions. While it’s too early to quantify exactly how much time will be saved, Google and PJM hope this AI-driven approach will bring long-overdue efficiencies to one of the most complex infrastructure systems in the United States.
